Basement Sports’ Take on ‘Mixed Reality’

What is “mixed reality”? It might depend on who you ask. Often, people use the term to refer to a VR headset or some other sort of device that combines physical movement with virtual reality. At its core, any form of mixed reality is a blend of physical and digital worlds. At Basement Sports, we have a different spin on the concept and how it applies to our vision and products.

One of our primary goals when developing the Basement Sports series of games was to combine the physical and digital spaces. We believe strongly in the value of real gameplay with friends or family, especially when mobile devices are being used by over 50% of kids age 11 and younger  – more than ever before. However, since so many kids and teens have access to smartphones or tablets, we combine our game with an easy to use App. By pairing our Baseball Starter Kit with the app, we create a new version of mixed reality, and reimagine how it can be used to encourage an active lifestyle.

Mixed Reality comes into play when users play a real game but update their app, in real time, to reflect activities in the physical space. Users can keep track of each inning, at bat or even every pitch if they choose. We want to enhance the experiences for kids and teens playing a baseball game by incorporating the kind of digital space that is already familiar to them.

The confluence of the digital and physical worlds is becoming apparent. Our vision is to bridge the gap between them, and create a product that those of all ages can enjoy.
